Eclipse Energy Named “Hydrogen Solution of the Year” for Scalable, Low-Cost Subsurface Hydrogen Technology
We don’t do victory laps, but we’ll allow ourselves one brief moment of celebration…
Eclipse Energy has been awarded “Overall Hydrogen Solution of the Year” by the Tech Breakthrough organization.
The annual CleanTech Breakthrough Awards work to highlight the technology companies driving measureable progress in sustainability, energy transformation, and climate innovation worldwide. The program’s thousands of entries point to an industry with rapid growth and investment interest in clean technology innovation.
Eclipse Energy’s distinction as Overall Hydrogen Solution of the Year is a confirmation of our approach to energy security. Our technology uses existing infrastructure and subsurface liabilities to deliver scalable, low-cost, and predictable clean fuel systems. At the intersection of geoscience, engineering, and deep microbiology, Eclipse has been able to redefine the subsurface as a clean energy asset for our partners around the globe.
Eclipse Energy's Work with Subsurface Hydrogen
For proof that Eclipse’s innovation is on a trajectory for real impact, our recent world-first successful field trial demonstrated subsurface bio-stimulated hydrogen production. This represented a landmark advancement in the cleantech market. The project marked the first-of-a-kind application of Eclipse Energy's proprietary biotechnology, which harnesses microbiology, depleted oil reservoirs, and existing infrastructure to generate hydrogen in situ, eliminating the need for new drilling, electrolysis, or energy-intensive surface facilities.
The key to really breaking through in the cleantech market – one that is littered with great ideas and promising innovations – is being cost-effective. Our partner network, most recently joined by Weatherford International, is a great indicator of Eclipse’s ability to deliver a viable, scalable service. This partnership, specifically, brings together Weatherford’s global footprint and operational expertise with Eclipse’s first-mover position in subsurface biotechnology to redefine how mature reservoirs and legacy infrastructure can contribute to the energy transition. We are one of the only teams able to do this with a pathway for cost-parity with fossil fuels.
By repurposing legacy oil infrastructure, we create a faster, cheaper, and cleaner pathway to decarbonization compared to green, blue, or other hydrogen. Our target cost of $0.50/kg hydrogen with a carbon intensity as low as green hydrogen directly challenges natural gas on price while being significantly cleaner. The approach eliminates the need for new surface facilities and leverages existing wells and reservoirs as subsurface biorefineries, accelerating deployment and drastically reducing capital intensity.
By reusing existing infrastructure, we remove the largest cost barriers facing other hydrogen production models. While subsidies like the U.S. IRA 45V credit or Canada’s Clean Hydrogen ITC improve margins, we are not reliant on them for viability. Carbon pricing and LCFS-style markets enhance competitiveness by monetizing avoided emissions. At $0.50/kg and CI comparable to green hydrogen, Eclipse delivers a uniquely economic pathway that rivals natural gas while achieving deep decarbonization.
Thank you to the Tech Breakthrough organization for recognizing our work and innovation. We’re focused on continuing to provide energy security and maintaining the title of “Overall Hydrogen Solution of the Year.”
At Eclipse Energy we're advancing the future of clean energy through innovation and collaboration. Let’s connect and explore how we can partner toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
