From Field Trial Success to Pathway for Global Scale: Reflecting on a Breakthrough Year in Subsurface Hydrogen

At Eclipse Energy, we’ve always believed the subsurface holds far more potential than it’s been given credit for. Looking back on our first successful subsurface bio-stimulated hydrogen production field trial, it’s clear that belief was well placed.

That initial field deployment marked a turning point not just for our company, but for how the energy industry is thinking about hydrogen production, legacy infrastructure, and the future of clean fuels. What began as a carefully designed pilot has become proof that hydrogen can be produced underground using existing oil reservoirs, engineered microbiology, and known geology.

Now, as we look ahead to 2026, we see this milestone as the foundation for what comes next.

In The Lab - From Field Trial Success to Pathway for Global Scale: Reflecting on a Breakthrough Year in Subsurface Hydrogen

Changing the Conversation: Proof and Progress

Our first field trial demonstrated something fundamental: subsurface bio-stimulated hydrogen production works in real-world conditions.

Utilizing an end-of-life oil reservoir that had been shut-in for multiple years as feedstock, we deployed our proprietary biotechnology into the subsurface and monitored reservoir behavior, microbial activity, and gas composition over time. The result was measurable hydrogen production at concentrations that exceeded our initial expectations.

This wasn’t a lab experiment or a theoretical model - it was a live field deployment using an existing well and its infrastructure.

For Eclipse Energy, the success of this trial validated several core principles that guide our work:

  • The subsurface is a predictable and controllable environment when approached with the right data and biology
  • Existing oilfield infrastructure can be repurposed for clean energy production without drilling new wells
  • Hydrogen production does not need to rely on water-intensive or power-intensive processes to scale

Beyond a Single Pilot: Why This Matters

The implications of this trial extend far beyond one field or one reservoir.

Across the globe, millions of oil and gas wells are approaching the end of their productive lives. Traditionally, these assets represent growing plug-and-abandonment (P&A) liabilities often costing operators millions of dollars with no return and growing risk.

Our technology offers a different path.

By converting late-life and depleted oil reservoirs into hydrogen-producing assets, operators can extend field life, reduce abandonment exposure, and unlock new revenue streams - all while contributing to decarbonization goals.

This is not about replacing existing hydrogen pathways. It’s about expanding the supply base with a low-capital, low-carbon option that complements green, blue, natural, and other hydrogen production methods.

Looking Ahead to 2026: From Validation to Scale

As we move into 2026, Eclipse Energy’s focus is clear: build on what worked and scale responsibly.

The success of our first field trial has informed the design of multiple upcoming deployments, each selected to expand our understanding of reservoir types, operating conditions, and commercial configurations.

In the coming year, we are advancing:

Additional Field Trials Across Diverse Reservoirs

Future trials will span different geologies, regions, and reservoir characteristics, allowing us to refine screening criteria, optimize microbial performance, and further validate scalability.

Commercial-Scale Project Development

We are working closely with operators and partners to transition from pilot deployments to longer-duration projects designed to support commercial hydrogen offtake.

Expanded Use-Case Integration

Subsurface hydrogen opens the door to multiple markets, including:

  • On-site and behind-the-meter power generation
  • Data center electrification
  • Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production
  • Industrial hydrogen supply

Each new trial brings us closer to aligning hydrogen production directly with local demand - reducing transport challenges and improving economies.

Foundation of Knowledge Gives Way to The Clean Energy Platform

Hydrogen is only the first step.

Our work has built one of the most robust subsurface genomics databases in the industry. As we expand field deployments, our understanding of how microbiology and geology interact will unlock new forms of clean energy. We’ve built a blueprint for decarbonization. One that is quick to enact, cost-effective, and primed for a global impact.

Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, Eclipse Energy is focused on disciplined expansion. We want to scale what works, learn from each deployment, and build a platform designed to benefit our partners for long-term impact.

At Eclipse Energy we're advancing the future of clean energy through innovation and collaboration. Let’s connect and explore how we can partner toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
